Seedlings were started in 72-well trays around December 1 and are being grown under lights on top of the filing cabinets in my office. The tables attached to the cabinet record the germination, with yellow squares indicating emergence of seedlings from soil. Germination rates have varied somewhat from cross to cross but have in a few cases exceeded 90% (see left-hand sheet). About 1-3 albino plants are seen per tray. They grow well for 4 weeks or so but subsequently die, after using up their stored food reserves. Lacking chlorophyll, they are unable to make their own food via photosynthesis.
